An LED screen does not always have to be flat. This was impressively demonstrated by our concave design at the Mercedes-Benz Vans stand at the IAA 2017. The aim was to present the new X-Class to visitors via visual emotions and to generate attention. The big-wave surfing theme associated with the presentation was to be reflected in a screen with a wave shape.
In order to build a corresponding seamless and rimless wave in the shape of the LED and to create a unique presentation, it was necessary to choose an LED module that was flexible in itself. Initially, there were various ideas and implementation approaches ranging from individual LED clusters to flexible mats and module systems. After some tests in advance, we decided on the module variant, which was particularly convincing in terms of presentation. Despite the longer construction compared to other systems, the flex module has several advantages: It has the stability for outdoor use and at the same time the variability for a concave or convex bend. Another basic requirement was all-weather resistant material that can withstand rain and wind loads. For this, a special stand and support construction had to be developed, which was integrated into the overall stand construction.
The IAA is considered the leading international trade fair for the automotive industry and attracted over 800,000 visitors to Frankfurt in 2017.
