Formula 1 at the Hockenheimring

German Grand Prix 2019

Technology used

  • Deployment of the largest mobile video wall – the Black Pearl
  • Active image area of 144 square metres
  • Screen with two further 81m² video walls
  • Display tower of 4 x 21 m²
  • two screens in the paddocks of 26 m² and 30 m² each

The five red double lights go out and the Formula 1 drivers go full throttle. This time, the start of the Formula 1 Grand Prix Germany at the Hockenheimring on the race weekend 27/28 July 2019 was not only exciting for the racers, but also for our Screen Visions team on site.

For the first time, the largest mobile video wall – the Black Pearl – was used. The LED screen has an active image area of 144 square metres, on which high-resolution produced content up to 4K can be played. With a 4.8 millimetre pixel, the image resolution is unique in this area and even short viewing distances can be realised as a result. At the Hockenheimring, the screen was used with two other 81m² video walls on the pre-grid area of the race track.

At the Hockenheimring we also used our Upad material again. The LED modules were used for the display tower of 4 x 21 m² and for two screens in the paddocks of 26 m² and 30 m² each.

Finally, we equipped the Hockenheimring with two more mobile video walls, each with a screen area of 60m² and 100m².

In addition, we were again responsible for coordinating the content playout on the screens this year. During the race breaks, our new LED material was used to show exciting moving images from backstage, giving fans a glimpse behind the scenes. Interviews with the racers, broadcasts of autograph sessions and DJs ensured that it was possible to show what the new LED generation is capable of throughout the entire event.

We needed only a few staff for the quick set-up and were well prepared for all eventualities thanks to the particularly weather-resistant material.
