Special Olympics 2019

The LED experts from Screen Visions were commissioned by CT-Middle East to create spectacular screens at this year's Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi. The Zayed Sports City Stadium, where the major sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities took place from 14 to 21 March 2019, was equipped by the Stuttgart specialists with an impressive main screen, an LED floor installation and a flying LED circle.

An LED main screen, with 64 x 36 modules and a total area of 576 m², was used in the Zayed Sports City Stadium. Additionally, an LED ‘donut & disc’ installation on the floor of the stadium provided visual highlights during the opening ceremony. Instead of an LED floor, an LED surface with 1,132 modules and a pixel pitch of 8 mm was used for the donut, which could be crossed over a small bridge. An OPERA foil also improved the quality of the image. Inside the donut, a disc of 176 modules and 8 mm pixel pitch was used. This made the LED floor installation a real highlight at the opening show in the Zayed Sports City Stadium.

At the 26th Special Olympics World Games, more than 7,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from over 170 countries competed in 24 different sports. This year, the Games were held for the first time in the United Arab Emirates. Germany was also represented in Abu Dhabi with a team of 163 athletes. The opening ceremony on 14 March was attended by 40,000 spectators and accompanied by international stars such as Avril Lavigne and Paul Oakenfold.

The Special Olympics ended on 21 March 2019 with a spectacular closing ceremony. In June 2023, the world's largest sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities will take place in Germany for the first time. Screen Visions is already looking forward to it.
