The 1st European Games – the innovative LED floor illuminates the closing celebrations

The first European Games in Baku ended on June 28 with a spectacular closing ceremony. For 17 days, close to 6,000 athletes from over 50 countries competed in 20 sports in the capital of Azerbaijan. The European Games were held for the first time this year. The organisers were the European Olympic Committee (EOC) and the umbrella association of Europe’s National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

In front of 68,000 spectators at Baku’s new Olympic Stadium, Cirque du Soleil star James Hadley brought a superlative show to the stage. It focused on the colours, the people and the traditions of Azerbaijan. One of the highlights was a gigantic show with 10,000 fireworks. Also part of the show were international music greats like John Newman, Clean Bandit and DJ Gareth Emery.

The closing event also set standards in terms of technology. It demanded the absolute best from the teams from around the world, who were responsible for lighting, sound, video, staging and decoration. 800 loudspeakers, 25 kilometres of cable, 2,000 lights and effects, 12,000 in-ear systems, 120 firework launching ramps on the stadium roof and 450 square metres of LED material on three stages all together ensured the perfect framework for the extraordinary show.

SCREEN VISIONS INVESTS IN NEW LED FLOOR

Especially for the European Games, Screen Visions together with its technology partners invested in 450 square metres of an all-new type of LED floor, which was developed specifically for the requirements of indoor and outdoor events. Its slip resistance makes it ideal for any event inside or outside. The innovative mask, with its black colour, achieved excellent contrasts. With 3,000 Nit at a viewing angle of 140 degrees and a 20-bit driver with a new type of driver chip, this LED floor is unmatched in the marketplace. And with a weight of only 10.5 kg per 50cm x 50cm module, it is also highly efficient to transport and install.

ACID TEST UNDER EXTREME CONDITIONS

Apart from the unique closing celebration, ScreenVisions also integrated LED technology for the sport competitions. Over the 14-week timeframe, they equipped 14 venues with a variety of video and display systems – for transmitting optimal live images to inform the numerous spectators.

The outdoor conditions in Baku presented a special challenge for the LED material. At air temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius and a humidity level of about 60 percent, the LED modules at times reached temperatures of up to 85 degrees Celsius – and they mastered this test as with flying colors.
