WWE Crown Jewel 2018

Wrestling: It's all about show, performance, sport and power. It was a project that appealed to us right from the start. Especially since extraordinary sport events call for extraordinary staging. And when the wrestlers meet for the “Clash of the Giants”, we make sure the whole atmosphere is suitably gigantic.

It was with this in mind, on 3 November 2018, that we used our LED modules to light up the world of wrestling at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh. We installed 2,268 LED modules (10 mm pixel pitch), which together created the shape of a Crown Jewel. Outside the wrestling ring, we deployed further LED modules, for instance, for the roof supports – with a total of 1,608 modules (16 mm pixel pitch). Altogether, the LED modules yielded an impressive total area of 1,200 square metres.

When giants compete, extreme measures can’t be avoided. We had to contend with extreme heights, weights and loads – challenges that we very successfully took on. For the pyramid-like structure, we also needed custom-made brackets and ‘passe-partouts’ around the screens of the crown.

The fact that the event didn’t take place in the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, but in Saudi Arabia, was mostly reflected in the elaborate travel arrangements, tighter timing due to the need to plan and organize sea freight and in the materials required for safe shipping.

Oliver Hahn, the project manager, looks back on the event and concludes: “In retrospect, the project actually feels like most any other project. Almost as if the whole thing took place in the Veltins Arena. But when I think about the complexity of planning and logistics, I quickly realise that the event didn’t just take place in the Veltins Arena. And I won’t be forgetting the planning and preparations for the Main Entrance Stage, the so-called Crown Jewel, anytime soon!”
